  • Dapoxetine

  • Dapoxetine, marketed as Priligy and Westoxetin 30 mg , (among and other brands), is the first compound developed specially for the treatment of premature ejaculation (PE) in men 18–64 years old.[1][2] Dapoxetine works by inhibiting the serotonin transporter, increasing serotonin's action at the post synaptic cleft, and as a consequence promoting ejaculatory delay.[3] As a member of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) family, dapoxetine was initially created as anantidepressant. However, unlike other SSRIs, dapoxetine is absorbed and eliminated rapidly in the body. Its fast acting property makes it suitable for the treatment of PE but not as an antidepressant.[4]

Originally created by Eli Lilly pharmaceutical company, dapoxetine was sold to Johnson & Johnson in 2003 and submitted as a New Drug Application to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of PE in 2004.[5] Dapoxetine has been sold in several European and Asian countries, and lately in Mexico. In the US, dapoxetine is in phase III development and expected to be marketed soon.[3] In 2012, Menarini acquired the rights to commercialise Priligy in Europe, most of Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East.

    Afghanistan’s fragile people

After years of war, battle shock has spread among the people of Afghanistan, but while the physical wounds are visible, the psychological danger is harder to see. Sixty percent of Afghans are suffering mental health problems, the World Health Organisation estimates, and even more of the children. NGOs involved in building up health services in Afghanistan are getting European support.

  • Health matters

  • Sleeping well is important for our health, few people will argue against that. Most people go short of sleep some time, and feel the effects. A nap during the day can do some good. Swiss television had this story about promoting the siesta.

The health effects of eating meat is an age-old debate. A more recent consideration is whether it is good for the planet we live on. French television ran this story about a vegetarian future just 50 years away.

Noise pollution has become a public health concern too. One out of three people is exposed to unhealthy levels of noise during the day, and one in five has trouble sleeping because of it. Spanish television reported on the World Health Organisation sounding the alarm.

  • Serious pollution causing health concerns in Beijing

  • Severe smog in China’s capital Beijing is drawing health concerns from local residents.

“The smog is really severe nowadays. The weather was never so depressing a few years ago. We are concerned about our health. Some of my family members have respiratory diseases, so they are very sensitive to this kind of weather. I have been thinking about finding a job outside Beijing, so I can get away from this weather and live somewhere nice,” said Lu Mengying, a 24-year-old college graduate.
